inthinc's In-Cab "Excessive Idling" Alerts Shown to Reduce Carbon Emissions by Up to 30 Percent

SALT LAKE CITY - 08/07/2012 - inthinc Technology Solutions Inc., a global company centered on telematics, fleet solutions and driver safety, has found its excessive idling alerts reduce idle time by 53 percent and CO2 emissions by 30 percent on average. With its unique in-cabexcessive idling verbal alerts, inthinc reminds drivers to turn off their vehicles and avoid prolonged idling and wasted fuel.

According to Lower Emissions and Particulates (LEaP), just 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting your engine. Despite this wasteful and environmentally harmful practice, many fleets have little to no enforcement policies when it comes to preventing drivers from idling.

With inthinc's excessive idling alerts, fleet owners can manage a fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly fleet by customizing exactly when an idling alert is given to the driver - setting time limits for 30 seconds, one minute, or any other threshold. Fleet managers can also monitor idle time for each vehicle and driver in their fleet via the web-based inthinc.com management portal, where additional efficiency scores are measured including seat belt use, aggressive driving and speeding.

"A verbal alert for idling in commercial vehicles allows drivers to be aware of how long they have left their engine running," said Corey Cattan, chief technology officer at inthinc. "It helps them stay aware of the environment - not to mention saving their organizations thousands of dollars in wasted fuel."

On average, inthinc customers have reduced idle time by 53 percent and carbon emissions by 30 percent. Additionally, inthinc customers have experienced a reduction in maintenance costs associated with the impact long periods of idling have on engine wear. According to Government Fleet, one hour of gasoline engine idle time equates to 33 miles of driving - representing significant wear and tear over the course of the vehicle's life.

inthinc's solutions are designed to cut carbon emissions by reducing idling, speeding and aggressive driving. Last year, as part of that focus, inthinc received Utah Business magazine's Green Business Award, for its contributions in improving the environment by reducing the carbon footprint left by commercial vehicles.

"inthinc is an example of a Utah-based company that is leading the way toward environmental awareness and sustainability," said Sarah Ryther Francom, managing editor at Utah Business magazine. "We applaud the company's fleet management software solution that helps individuals change their driving habits and ultimately cut CO2 emissions."
